WEEKLY REVIEW 24-31 MAY

It was a break from league games this week for our NIWFA teams, with cup action the order of the day as our League Cup quarter-finals took place. Here’s our review of the games played.

CHAMPIONSHIP LEAGUE CUP QUARTER FINALS
Ballymena United upset the odds at Clandeboye Park on Friday night as the County Antrim-based side produced a professional, hard-working performance to beat Bangor Ladies 3-1. United had led three-nil at half-time thanks to goals from Rebecca Curry, Chelsea Millar and Jennifer Montgomery, and although Bangor did pull one back through Olivia Marshall in the second half, the United defence held firm to ensure their progress into the semi-finals.

They will be joined in the last four by St James Swifts, who were made to battle all the way by Ballyclare Comrades before eventually winning 2-1. A double from Siobhan Bell had seen the Swifts lead 2-0, but a goal from Aliyah Monthe gave the visitors hope, but ultimately that was the only reward they got for their efforts as the Swifts held on to secure their semi-final berth.

Also taking their place in the last four will be Greenisland Women, who fought back from an eleventh-minute Aine McCallsiter goal for Ballymoney United to eventually win 3-1. Greenisland’s goals on the night came from Nicole Wheeldon, an own goal and Lucy Redmond.

The last team to claim their semi-final berth was Strabane Athletic, who scored a 3-2 win at Stangmore Park to defeat Mid Ulster Ladies. In the tussle, Strabane had taken a 2-0 lead through goals from Shantelle Temple and Aimee Lafferty, only for Mid Ulster to level the game through a Sharagh Murphy strike and an 86th-minute equaliser from Liza McDonnell. Just when the game seemed destined to be decided on penalties, up popped Lafferty in the 89th minute for her second goal of the night to break Mid Ulster hearts.

NIWFA DIVISION ONE LEAGUE CUP QUARTER FINALS
It was a late, and ultimately disappointing. night for the players of Ambassadors, as after drawing 1-1 in normal time at Maiden City, they eventually lost a marathon penalty shoot-out 10-9 to the Derry-based side. Maiden will be joined in the semi-finals by Rosario, who were victorious on penalty kicks after drawing 2-2 with SOP. Comber Rec are also in the semi-finals after they secured an impressive 4-3 at Carrick Rangers Falcons, with their winning goal coming from a Megan Gore striker deep into injury time. League leaders Lisbellaw United are the final side in the last four after they defeated Ballynahinch Ladies 3-0

NIWFA DIVISION TWO LEAGUE CUP QUARTER FINALS
A first half full of action saw Coleraine Women race into a 2-0 lead at Ballyclare Comrades Reserves only for the hosts to fight back with three goals of their own before the break to lead 3-2 at the interval. With no further goals in the second period Comrades progressed to the semi-final where they will be joined by Armagh City who beat Mid Ulster Ladies Reserves 2-0, Belfast Swifts who defeated 22nd Ladies 2-0 and league leaders Ballynahinch Olympic who were awarded a win over Antrim Town.

NIWFA DIVISION THREE LEAGUE CUP QUARTER FINALS
Comfortable wins for Oxford Sunnyside and Belfast Ravens saw both sides ease their way into the semi-final, where they will be joined by Ards Rangers Women, who edged home courtesy of a penalty shoot-out win over Comber Rec Reserves.

NIWFA DIVISION FOUR LEAGUE CUP QUARTER FINALS
From the three games played this week in the Division Four league cup, it took two penalty shoot outs to decide who would make the last four this season, Banbridge Town are one of the four sides who will compete after they overcame Draperstown on pens with Holywood Ladies also needing pens to defeat Belfast Ravens II. Greenisland Women Res are also into the last four with the final place to be decided after Wellington Rec play their quarter final game against one of the “lucky losers” losing sides in the quarter finals. This is required due to their only being 7 sides participating this season in Division Four with a draw being made to decide who re-enters the competition.

NIWFA DIVISION FIVE LEAGUE CUP QUARTER FINALS
There was no need for any penalty shootouts in the Division Five quarter finals, with Ballynagross, Donegal Celtic, Rathfriland Rangers and Bloomfield all comfortably making their way into the last four.

NIWFA DIVISION SIX LEAGUE CUP QUARTER FINALS
It was mostly home comforts this week in the Division Six quarter-finals, with hosts Antrim Town, Newhill, and Wellington Rec all securing wins to reach the semi-finals. The only team going against the grain this week was Carryduff Ladies, who secured a win at First Bangor to claim the final semi-final berth.

BARCLAYS NIWFA PATHWAY LEAGUES
Berlin Swiftettes continued their 100% winning start in the Eastern Division with a victory this week over Crewe United Ladies. Also winning were Larne Tech and Carryduff Ladies II, with Civil Service and Castle drawing 4-4.
The Western Pathway league is developing into an interesting race with only three points separating the top four. Carniny lead the way following their victory over Coagh this week, but they are closely followed by Tristar, Ballymena United Reserves and Loughgall Lakers.

BARCLAY’S LEAGUE REVIEW 17-23 MAY

BARCLAYS NIWFA CHAMPIONSHIP
With league leaders Sion Swift’s game v Greenisland having to be abandoned due to an unrelated incident off the pitch this week, second-place St.James Swifts made the most of their postponement with a 5-1 win over Craigavon City. St.James goals on the night came courtesy of a Siobhan Bell double and single strikes from Katierose Rice, Olivia Connolly and Deborah Boyd, with Craigavon’s sole reply coming from Kayla Campbell. The result moves St.James to within two points of Sion, who still top the table.
Elsewhere, a late Olivia Blain strike gave Ballyclare Comrades a 1-0 win over Strabane Athletic, and in the division’s final game this week, the league’s bottom two were unable to find a goal between them as Mid Ulster Ladies and Ballymena United drew 0-0. This was United’s fifth draw in eight games this season, the point moving them out of the bottom places.

BARCLAYS NIWFA DIVISION ONE
A Gracie Elliott strike was enough to decide a highly competitive game between Lisbellaw United and Carrick Rangers Falcons. The Result, coupled with Comber Rec’s goalless draw at Ballynahinch United, sees Lisbellaw move four points clear of the top of the Division One standings. Elsewhere, Ambassadors continued their return to form with a 4-0 win over SOP, whilst Rosario also picked up three points following an impressive 2-0 win over Maiden City.

BARCLAYS NIWFA DIVISION TWO
Ballynahinch Olympic maintained their lead at the top of Division Two following a 4-1 win at Mid Ulster Ladies Reserves; however, Coleraine Women kept within touching distance following their 7-1 victory over Belfast Swifts. Armagh City and Ballyclare Comrades Reserves both lost ground at the top after they drew 2-2, with the division’s final game seeing 22nd Ladies moving clear from the bottom after a comprehensive 7-1 win over Antrim Town, who have dropped to the bottom of the table following that result.

BARCLAYS NIWFA DIVISION THREE
The big game in Division Three this week pitted two sides who had started the game with 100% winning records as Belfast Ravens hosted Valley Rangers at Knockbreda. And what a game this turned out to be as the Ravens produced one of the performances of the season to totally dismantle their opposition, eventually winning 9-0. Four-goal Bethany Kerr was the star of the show in a result which was Valley’s first defeat in some three years of competing in NIWFA. Oxford Sunnyside made the most of Valley’s slip as they moved level on points with them by defeating St Mary’s, whilst Moneyslane defeated Ballymoney United Reserves. In the division’s final game, the local derby between Ards Rangers and Comber Rec Reserves ended 1-1

BARCLAYS NIWFA DIVISION FOUR
It was a successful away day in Division Four, with all three travelling sides securing wins this week: Portadown won at Holywood, Draperstown Celtic won at Banbridge Town, and Wellington Rec won at Greenisland II. Those results mean it’s still Portadown ladies who top Division Four with Wellington Rec in hot pursuit.

BARCLAYS NIWFA DIVISION FIVE
Donegal Celtic remain top of Division Five following a 4-1 victory at home to Bloomfield, with Ballynagross staying in second place following their win against Hanover. This week also saw wins for Dromara Village and Rathfriland Ladies.

BARCLAYS NIWFA DIVISION SIX
Division Six this week saw wins for 22nd Ladies II and Antrim Town Swifts, who defeated Coleraine Women Reserves and Belfast Ravens III respectively, with the division’s final game producing a high-scoring thriller as 1st Bangor defeated Carrydiff 5-4, thanks mainly to a Leona Lappin hat-trick. The division’s top two sides, Newhill and Wellington Rec Athletic, meet one another on Sunday 24th May.

BARCLAYS NIWFA PATHWAY LEAGUES
League leaders Berlin Swiftettes had no game this week, with Ballymacash Rangers closing the gap at the top of the Eastern pathway league following a fine win over Larne Tech, for whom it was the first loss of the season. There were also victories for Willowbank, Castle Ladies and Carryduff Ladies II
In the Western Pathway League, Carniny moved to the top of the table following a fine 5-3 win over Loughgall Lakers, with Tristar, Ballymena United Reserves, Limavady United and Lisbellaw United Reserves also securing wins this week.

BARCLAY’S LEAGUE REVIEW 10-16 MAY

BARCLAYS NIWFA CHAMPIONSHIP
Grace Dickson scored the quickest goal of the season to give Sion Swifts an early lead at Craigavon City this week. The goal, which came after only, wait for this, nine seconds of play, set league leaders Sion on their way to a 6-0 victory, although it should be noted that, despite the score line, Craigavon pressed them head throughout the game with Sion’s clinical finishing being the big difference between the sides. Other scorers on the night for the Swifts were a Caoimhne Heron hat-trick and single strikes from Zoe Green and Chloe Boyle.

Defending champions St.James Swifts continued their recent fine form, defeating Ballymena United 3-0 at the Showgrounds. Two goals from Katierose Rice and one from skipper Siobhan Bell mean that St. James, in second place, trail Sion by five points, but with a game in hand. For Ballymena, the result saw them tumble into second from bottom of the standings, a situation they will be determined to rectify as soon as possible.

Bangor are in third place in the table, a position they retained this week following a thumping 7-0 win over Mid Ulster Ladies. Olivia Marshall was the star of this particular show, netting three times, and she was ably assisted by Amanda Morton, Amber Dempster, Laurie Bell and Naomi Donnan. For Mid Ulster, this result sees them remain on the bottom rung of the league ladder with only one point to their name so far this season, worrying times for the Mid Ulster Club.

In the division’s final game this week, Ballyclare Comrades continued their recent return to form with a 4-1 victory at Ballymoney United. Four first-half goals from Aliyah Monthe (x2), Tazmin Watson and Molly Weir gave the hosts a second-half mountain to climb, and although they did pull one back through Abby Alexander, there was to be no way back in this one for Ballymoney.

BARCLAYS NIWFA DIVISION ONE
Lisbellaw United are top of Division One following their fourth consecutive win as they defeated Maiden City 3-1. The win meant Lisbellaw maintained their 100% winning start to the season, with their position assisted by Comber Rec being unable to break down a resolute Ambassadors defence as the sides drew 0-0, and Carrick Rangers Falcons, somewhat surprisingly, losing at home 2-3 to Ballynahinch United. The division’s final game this week saw SOP pick up their first points of the season, defeating Rosario 2-1.

BARCLAYS NIWFA DIVISION TWO
A 4-0 victory for Ballynahinch Olympic over Ballyclare Comrades Reserves saw the Olympic maintain their undefeated start to the season and, in doing so moving to the top of the Division Two table. Armagh City moved into second place after they recorded their third consecutive win, this time 1-0 v Coleraine Women, whilst Antrim Town’s difficult season continued as a 0-3 defeat to Belfast Swifts saw them fall to bottom place in the table. In the division’s final game, Mid Ulster Ladies Reserves eased home 3-0 at the 22nd Ladies.

BARCLAYS NIWFA DIVISION THREE
Goals galore were the order of the day in Division Three, with 38 goals being registered across the four games played. Big hitters this week were Valley Rangers and Oxford Sunnyside, both of whom registered ten goals in victories over St.Marys and Ards Rangers, with Belfast Ravens not far behind as they scored nine against Moneyslane. Comber Rec Reserves narrowly lost 3-4 to Ballymoney United Reserves, leaving Valley and the Ravens locked on 12 points at the top of the table, with the two sides due to face one another this week.

BARCLAYS NIWFA DIVISION FOUR
Portadown Ladies and Wellington Rec both maintained their 100% records this week, with the Ports sitting top of the table following their fourth consecutive win, a 5-1 victory over Belfast Ravens II. Wellingon Rec made it three wins from three games played as they defeated Banbridge Town, whilst the division’s final game this week saw Greenisland Women II defeat Holywood Ladies 3-1

BARCLAYS NIWFA DIVISION FIVE
A Cliodhna Petticrew first-half hat-trick was enough to see Donegal Celtic Ladies defeat Shorts 3-2, with the result keeping the Celts at the top of the Division Five table. Ballynagross are in hot pursuit after victory over Dromara Village, but Bloomfield fell back as they lost 4-2 at Hanover. Elsewhere, Rathfriland Women defeated Ards Rangers Women 2-2

BARCLAYS NIWFA DIVISION SIX
Wellington Rec Athletic and Newhill remain joint top of Division Six as both side kept up their 100% records this week with victories over Carryduff Ladies and Coleraine Women Reserves respectively. Elsewhere, Belfast Ravens III picked up their first win of the season after they defeated 22nd Ladies II 2-1

BARCLAYS NIWFA PATHWAY LEAGUES
Victories for Berlin Swiftettes, Larne Tech, Civil Service and Carryduff Ladies II mean the Swiftettes remain top of the Eastern Pathway league, with three points separating them from Larne Tech, who have a game in hand.
In the Western Pathway League, Loughgall Lakers sit top of the table following a tightly fought 1-0 win over Lisbellaw United Reserves this week.

BARCLAY’S LEAGUE REVIEW 3-9 MAY

BARCLAYS NIWFA CHAMPIONSHIP
Sion Swifts continued their fine early-season form, dismantling Ballymena United 3-0 this week to make it six wins from six games played for the Tyrone-based side. First-half goals from Hannah Gibson and Brooke Milligan set them on their way, with Rachel Barnaby netting the third to complete a comprehensive win.

Defending champions St. James Swifts declared their determination to retain their title with a 4-1 victory over Bangor, a win that saw them leapfrog their opponents into second place in the table. Roise Thompson and Tiarna Hunter gave the Swifts the perfect start, and although Bangor did pull one back through recent signing from Linfield, Laurie Bell, second-half strikes from Anna Whibley at the start of the second half and a late goal from Chloe Friary saw the Swifts home. The gap between St.James and league leaders Sion Swifts is currently 5 points, although St.James do have a game in hand.

Greenisland put their recent winless run behind them this week as they defeated Craigavon City 2-1, thanks to goals from Lucy Redmond and Rachel Patterson, with Craigavon’s reply coming from Kayla Campbell.

And in the division’s final game this week, Mid Ulster Ladies picked up their first point of the season after drawing 2-2 at home to Strabane Athletic. Strabane had led twice in this one, thanks to a double from Aimee Lafferty; however, Mid Ulster pulled back on both occasions, thanks to goals from Dee Kenny and Ainara Hutcheson. Highlights from this game will be online shortly.

BARCLAYS NIWFA DIVISION ONE
Comber Rec kept up their 100% winning record in the First division with a 2-1 victory over Rosario, while Lisbellaw United also continued their 100% winning start to the season after beating Ballynahinch Ladies 1-0 to make it three wins from three games. Elsewhere, Carrick Rangers Falcons are also unbeaten after Genna Brown hit a hat-trick to see them ease home 3-1 at Amabassadors, who are still looking for their first point of the season. In the division’s final game this week, Maiden City overpowered SOP 10-2.

BARCLAYS NIWFA DIVISION TWO
Last week’s joint league leaders,, Coleraine Women and Ballynahinch Olympic, drew 1-1 this week, with that result, coupled with Ballyclare Comrades Reserves’ 4-1 victory over 22nd Ladies, allowing the Comrades to leapfrog both sides to move to the top of the Division Two table. Elsewhere in Division Two, Antrim Town’s slow start to the season continued as they lost 2-6 to Mid Ulster Ladies Reserves, and Armagh City made it two wins in a row after defeating Belfast Swifts 3-1

BARCLAYS NIWFA DIVISION THREE
Last week, we reported that no fewer than four teams had 100% winning starts to the season in Division three, but this week’s fixtures have reduced that to two – Valley Rangers and Belfast Ravens. Valley won a tight game 3-2 over Oxford Sunnyside, with the Ravens cruising home 8-0 over Comber Rec Reserves, that defeat for Sunnyside ended their 100% winning start to the season, with St.Marys also dropping their first points as they lost 0-1 at Moneyslane.

BARCLAYS NIWFA DIVISION FOUR
With Wellington Rec not having a game this week, Portadown Ladies made the most of their opportunity, defeating Greenisland Women II 3-1 to move three points clear at the top of the Division Four standings. Draperstown Celtic picked up their first points of the season with a win over Belfast Ravens II, with Banbridge Town beating Holywood Ladies in the remaining game in this division.

BARCLAYS NIWFA DIVISION FIVE
No game for the league leaders Donegal Celtic Ladies this week meant that a 5-1 win for Bloomfield over Shorts, along with wins for Ballynagross and Dromara Village, means we currently have a four-way tie at the top of Division Five with Bloomfield, Donegal Celtic, Ballynagross and Dromara Village all neck and neck on 6 points.

BARCLAYS NIWFA DIVISION SIX
Division Six was the place to be this week if you wanted goals, with no less than 35 goals being spread over the 4 games played. Big winners this week were Newhill, First Bangor Ladies, Carryduff Ladies and Wellington Rec Athletic.

BARCLAYS NIWFA PATHWAY LEAGUES
Crewe United Ladies secured their first victory since reforming this week, beating Cloughey Ladies 5-1; however, it’s Berlin Swiftettes who lead the way in the Eastern Pathway league, with Ballymacash Rangers Ladies and Larne Tech in close pursuit.
Finally, in the Pathway Western section, Loughgall Lakers and Carniny AYFC both posted wins to keep their 100% winning starts to the season intact.

BARCLAY’S LEAGUE REVIEW 26 APR - 2 MAY

With the remainder of our NIWFA Leagues getting underway this week, here’s our review of all the action from around the various divisions.

BARCLAYS NIWFA CHAMPIONSHIP
The parity in the game between the joint league leaders, Sion Swifts and Bangor, lasted only one minute when the sides met on Wednesday night as the Swift’s Hannah Gibson finished superbly, giving the visitors an early lead at Clandeboye Park. This early strike gave the Swifts the impetus they needed, and although they missed a penalty to increase their lead a second strike saw them lead 2-0 by halftime. Brooke Milligan added a third early in the second half, and although Amber Dempster pulled one back for Bangor, a late goal to complete her hat-trick from Gibson ensured the Co.Tyrone side returned home with all three points.
St James Swifts made the most of Bangor’s lapse as they won a dramatic game 4-3 at Strabane Athletic to move to within touching distance of the Seasiders in the league standings. All of the goals in this one came in the second half with strikes from Olivia Connolly, Courtney Moore, Katierose Rice & Anna Whibley seeing the visitors home, although Strabane did have the player of the match in Aimee Lafferty, who netted a hat trick for the Tyrone side.
Mid Ulster Ladies’ disappointing start to the season continued as they conceded six goals to a rampant Ballymoney United, led from the front by a three-goal haul by Cleo-Neece Taggart. Half-time had seen Mid Ulster leading 2-1 through goals from Ainara Hutchinson and Dee Kenny (Ballymoneys reply from Layla O’Hara), but once Taggart found her shooting boots, there was only ever going to be one winner. Ballymoney added two more through Abby Alexander and Emily Kyle, and even though Kenny added a third for Mid Ulster, it ended Ballymoney United 6 Mid Ulster Ladies 3
In the division’s final game this week, the league’s draw specialists were at it again as Ballymena United drew 1-1 with Greenisland for their fourth draw in five games played. Rachel Patterson had given Greenisland the lead, only for Jenny Montgomery to draw the Sky Blues of Ballymena level as the game ended 1-1

BARCLAYS NIWFA DIVISION ONE
Comber Rec are at the top of the Division One table following a great 1-0 victory at Maiden City to make it two wins from 2 games played, with Carrick Rangers Falcons now moving up to second place following their 3-2 win over Rosario. In the division’s final game, the Ambassadors’ slow start to the season continued as they lost 1-2 at Ballynahinch Ladies.

BARCLAYS NIWFA DIVISION TWO
A first-minute strike from Shannon Friel set the tone for Coleraine Ladies as they went on to brush aside the 22nd Ladies 8-3, with Friel scoring no less than five goals on the night. Highlights from this game will be online shortly. Elsewhere, Ballynahinch Olympics’ impressive start to Division Two continued as they blew away Belfast Swifts 6-1 to move to the top of the table. The final two games in the division saw Armagh City beat Antrim Town 2-1 and Ballyclare Comrades Reserves defeat Mid Ulster Ladies Reserves 1-0, securing their second consecutive win of the season.

BARCLAYS NIWFA DIVISION THREE
No less than four teams are on maximum points after two games played in Division Three, with impressive away wins being recorded by Valley Rangers, Oxford Sunnyside, Belfast Ravens and St. Mary’s this week. This situation, however, will change this week as Valley Rangers travel to take on Oxford Sunnyside on Friday night.

BARCLAYS NIWFA DIVISION FOUR
A comfortable 5-0 win over Draperstown sent Portadown Ladies to the top of Division four, with Wellington Rec joining them on six points from two games played following their win over Belfast Ravens II. The division’s final game saw Greenisland Women II win their first match of the season, defeating Banbridge Town 5-2.

BARCLAYS NIWFA DIVISION FIVE
Donegal Celtic Ladies are top of the Division Five table following an impressive comeback win over Ballynagross, where they trailed 2-0 before fighting back to secure a 4-3 victory. The division’s big hitters this week were Bloomfield, who racked up ten goals against Ards Rangers II, with most of the damage being done by Sophie Sherman, who scored 5 goals. Elsewhere, Dromara Village and Hanover recorded victories.

BARCLAYS NIWFA DIVISION SIX
Division Six sees Newhill and Wellington Rec II leading the standings after both recorded their second wins this week. First Bangor defeated 22nd Ladies II and Antrim Town Reserves, and Coleraine Women Reserves drew 2-2 in the final game.

BARCLAYS NIWFA PATHWAY LEAGUES
Berlin Swiftettes secure their second victory to move clear at the top of the Easter Pathway league, with Civil Service, Ballymacash Rangers and Larne Tech also securing wins. Meanwhile, in the Western section, the goals flowed, with no fewer than 36 goals scored across the five fixtures. Following the latest round of fixtures, Carniny and Loughgall Lakers lead the standings.

NIWFA CHAMPIONSHIP LEAGUE CUP
Finally, there was a big shock in the preliminary round of the Championship League Cup as holders Sion Swifts were knocked out at the first hurdle by an impressive display by Ballyclare Comrades Ladies, who won 4-1 thanks to a Nina Morrison hat-trick and a single goal from Deborah McCarthy. Also exiting the competition at the first stage were Craigavon City, who lost 2-3 to Ballymoney United thanks to an 89th-minute strike from Abby Alexander following two earlier goals from Cleo-Neece Taggart, with Craigavon’s goals coming from Maisie Roke and Saorise Crossey.

WEEKLY LEAGUE REVIEW 22 - 28 MARCH

The 2026 NIWFA Barclays league got underway this week with the first games of the Championship kicking off the new season.
Sion Swifts laid down an early marker of their intentions for the new season as they brushed aside Mid Ulster Ladies 6-1 in their opening fixture on Wednesday night. Goals from Hannah Gibson and Ciara McAleer gave the Swifts the perfect start, and although Mid Ulster Ladies pulled one back through Sorcha Lucas before the break, strikes in the second half from Brooke Milligan and Zahara Leckey, along with two more from Gibson, to complete her hat-trick, saw the hosts storm to a winning start.

Bangor Ladies were also amongst the goals, although they were thwarted for most of the first half by a resilient Strabane Athletic Ladies, who were making their debut in the Championship. The opening goal eventually came in first-half stoppage time when Janine Jess bundled the ball home following a corner to give the hosts a slender lead. Buoyed by that goal, Bangor then upped the pace in the second half with a single strike from Amber Dempster and a double from Olivia Marshall saw them secure a 4-0 victory. Match highlights from this game are online elsewhere on our social media.

The division’s other promoted side, Craigavon City Ladies, got their season off to the perfect start as they edged home 1-0 against Ballyclare Comrades Ladies thanks to a 58th-minute goal from Shannon Coleman.

In the division’s final game this week, it was honours even as Ballymena United Women and Ballymoney United Ladies drew 1-1 at the Showgrounds. Aine McCalister scored the first goal of the season after she gave Ballymoney the lead in the first minute of the game, with Ballymena eventually equalising on 87 minutes through a Megan Henry strike.
