The 18-woman squad start their campaign on Saturday against a strong Scotland team, followed by a game on Monday against former European Champions Italy, and finally take on the hosts Bulgaria next Thursday.
Alfie Wylie, Team coach, is aware of the huge task ahead for his squad. He said: “I know we are in a very tough group, but all the girls are really looking forward to the challenge. Playing against some of the best Under-19 teams in Europe is something that all of us are excited about. The girls are very motivated to do well as this is what they have worked for and what football is all about. Although we have a few injuries, we have seven members of the squad who played in the Azerbaijan tournament last year and their experience will be vital for the team.”
There has been a lot of advancement in Northern Ireland Woman’s Football in the last few years, culminating in the quality of players that are now present in the National squads. Alfie went on to say:” All of these girls have come through the County system so playing in tournaments like this for their country is testament to all the hard work and dedication they have shown. There is no doubt that this tournament is up a level, but the experience gained will be of great benefit for their future international careers.”
